The Office Adds New Castmember!

Meet the Staples MailMate Shredder SPL-727MM the newest member of NBC's The Office!

In all seriousness, what do you think about such blatant product placement? The Staples MailMate was not just shown sitting in a corner, it was actually worked into the plot and discussed! Kevin raved about it! It even shreds credit cards!!!!

Is over-the-top product placement a necessary evil in an age of Tivos?

I thought this was one of the most blatant product placements I have ever seen. Esepcially since the commercial for it ran at the next break. And in the show itself, it had a big "Staples" sticker on it whereas the actual product doesn't.

Sad.

Was the show entertaining? Did the plot points involving the product contain more than just advertising?

If you answered yes, then who cares. If it entertained you and made you laugh, who cares if it had an in-show product placement. They have to pay for those shows somehow, and if it still entertains you, who cares.

I'm personally hoping they make the shredder a regular cast member.

Overall, the show was entertaining. But the shredder bit just made me feel dirty! Especially when they played a commercial for it a few moments later! I knew it was more than just typical product placement. A much larger conspiracy was afoot...

Don't get me wrong, I think product placement is ok. I just don't think it should be so blatant! Make it subtle!

It will be interesting to see if they do more of these.
