Cover Songs That Meet (Or Exceed) The Original

I have always thought that Johnny Cash's "Hurt" and Marilyn Manson's "Sweet Dreams" are two of the best cover songs ever recorded. Both are cases in which the respective song is either equal ("Hurt") or superior ("Sweet Dreams") to the original. Agree? If not, go home! Also, the video for Cash's take on "Hurt" is very moving and a more than a touch depressing. A very powerful piece.

Agree that Cash's Hurt is equal to NIN's.

Agree that MM's Sweet Dreams is superior to Eurythmics (I wonder if they intentionally misspelled "rhythm" in their name)

Some others:

Blue Monday: Orgy > New Order

Faith: Limp Bizkit > George Michael (as much as I hate to say Limp Bizkit is superior in anything)

How Soon is Now?: Original by the Smiths; enough covers to make a new album

Sweet Child O' Mine: BURN IN HELL SHERYL CROW!!!

Cat Scratch Fever: Pantera > Ted Nugent

Higher Ground: Stevie Wonder ?=? Red Hot Chili Peppers

Knockin' on Heaven's Door: GnR > Bob Dylan

Simple Man: Skynrd ?=? Shinedown (Shinedown did alright on this song)

And many, many more, including one of the least known but coolest covers ever: The Devil Went Down to Georgia: Steve Ouimette > Charlie Daniels Band (recorded exclusively for GH3)

Velvet Underground/Cowboy Junkies: Sweet Jane

I love RHCP's version of "Higher Ground" as well as VH's "You Really Got Me". I would definitely consider those two songs to be at least equal to the original if not better.

Ataris - Boys of Summer (henely original)

Smash Mouth - I'm a Believer (monkees original)

Fallout Boy - Smooth Criminal (MJ original)

Remix's (but not really altering the song)

Fatboy Slim - Magic carpet Ride (Steppenwolf)

My general "good cover" is to fatten the beat and speed up the song a bit which is why I have to agree with the comments on Madonna and Sheryl Crow

God! I almost forgot one of my favorites! The Gourds version of Snoop's "Gin & Juice" is a masterpiece.

Every time I hear it I want to hop in a car and smash mailboxes with a baseball bat!
